Headaches Q & A

What are primary headaches?

Any problem that affects your head’s pain-sensitive structures, including the nerves, blood vessels, and muscles around your skull, as well as the chemical activity in your brain, can produce a primary headache. Of the more than 150 kinds of primary headache pain that exist, the three most common are:

Tension headaches

As the most common form of headache pain, tension headaches occur when the muscles around your skull contract intermittently, causing mild to moderate rhythmic pain.

Migraine headaches

Migraines are moderate to severe headaches that typically produce pounding, throbbing pain on one side of your head. They can last for a few hours or several days and may give rise to other intense symptoms, like sensitivity to light and noise.

Cluster headaches

These throbbing, burning, or piercing headaches often occur behind one eye. Although they usually appear several times a day during a so-called “cluster” period, they can also disappear for long stretches before recurring.

How are secondary headaches different?

Secondary headaches don’t begin in your head. Instead, they’re prompted by an underlying disorder or condition that somehow triggers the pain-sensitive structures in your head.

This type of headache pain is usually linked to a problem within your cervical (neck) spine, such as facet syndrome. It is also caused by the kind of ongoing jaw tension that occurs with an untreated temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder.

Is it possible to stop chronic headaches?

Chiropractic care incorporates a wide range of beneficial modalities to provide natural and long-lasting relief for all kinds of headache pain, including persistent migraines.

If Dr. Newton, DC, determines that your headaches stem from a structural misalignment in your cervical spine, he can provide swift and long-lasting relief with precise spinal adjustments, therapeutic massage, and corrective stretches.

If you suffer from migraines, Dr. Newton, DC, can help you identify your triggers and offer concrete advice on how to avoid them. Common migraine triggers include:

  • Female hormonal changes
  • Increased stress or fatigue
  • Shifts in sleep patterns
  • Intense sensory stimuli
  • Weather or seasonal changes

Dr. Newton, DC, and his team also offer cold laser therapy treatments to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and promote healing in the pain-sensitive structures of your head.
