Joint Pain Q & A

Why do my joints hurt?

As the point of connection and leverage between two bones, your joints allow your body to move through the world with a full range of motion. All of your body’s movable joints, ranging from your knee and hip joints to your elbow and shoulder joints, are made up of a precisely structured network of bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and muscles.

Although healthy joints are strong and resilient, their inherent complexity leaves them prone to a variety of painful problems, disorders, and conditions, virtually all of which fall into one of the following four categories:

  • Arthritis
  • Inflamed or torn tendons
  • Instability
  • Broken bones

Of all the problems that can lead to chronic joint pain, ongoing wear-and-tear, or degenerative arthritis, is by far the most common.

How does osteoarthritis affect my joints?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common cause of joint pain and the most prevalent form of arthritis, affecting more than 30 million adults in the United States.

Also known as degenerative joint disease, OA causes the progressive deterioration of cartilage and bone within an affected joint. Although the disease begins slowly and progresses gradually, it usually worsens as time goes on. Primary symptoms include:

  • Persistent joint pain
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Stiffness and swelling

While you are more likely to develop osteoarthritis if you’re older or overweight, most people develop the condition from routine wear-and-tear or in a joint that’s injured by high-impact activities that cause repetitive stress.

How can I find relief from chronic joint pain?

To resolve or manage chronic joint pain effectively, Dr. Newton, DC, and his team must determine the nature and extent of your underlying problem. When joint discomfort and stiffness are caused by a degenerative condition like osteoarthritis, a comprehensive treatment plan aims to:

  • Increase joint lubrication
  • Reduce swelling
  • Relieve chronic pain
  • Restore range of motion
  • Improve mobility

To achieve these goals, Dr. Newton, DC, and his team use a variety of treatments, ranging from rest, ice, elevation, and compression to therapeutic massage and soft tissue adjustments.

Physical therapy — a personalized program of joint-friendly exercises and stretches designed to strengthen, stabilize, and protect your joints — is especially helpful for keeping joint pain under control. Depending on which joints are affected, you may also benefit from brisk walking, swimming, water aerobics, bicycling, or yoga.

Dr. Newton, DC, and his team also use advanced cold laser therapy to promote rapid cellular regeneration and accelerate healing in painful joints that are affected by trauma, inflammation, or malfunction.
