Neck Pain Q & A

Why does my neck hurt?

The seven small bones, connecting joints, spinal discs, and adjoining soft tissues that make up your cervical (neck) spine support the weight of your head and help you rotate it with ease.

Although your neck is inherently flexible and resilient, it’s also prone to injuries and conditions that limit your range of motion and give rise to ongoing stiffness and discomfort. Common causes of neck pain include:

Degenerative conditions

Osteoarthritis occurs when ongoing wear-and-tear causes the cartilage between the bones in your neck to break down, leading to painful nerve impingement or bone spurs.

Cervical stenosis, another age-related condition that occurs when the spaces within your spinal canal become narrower, can also give rise to chronic neck pain.

Constant muscle strain

As a major cause of persistent neck pain in today’s screen-driven world, strained neck muscles are usually the result of spending too much time hunched over a smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

Structural misalignments

Poor posture and ongoing muscle strain can cause your cervical spine to shift out of alignment and leave you in pain. Similarly, a posture-driven misalignment in your lower back can lead to neck pain if your cervical spine shifts off-center to offset the imbalance.

Traumatic injuries

By compressing your cervical spine and damaging supporting soft tissues, a forceful whiplash injury can cause long-lasting neck pain, stiffness, and restricted head mobility.

Why is it important to treat neck pain?

Although the stiffness, soreness, and discomfort associated with minor neck problems often subside on their own without treatment, the symptoms caused by more severe neck problems tend to persist or even worsen over time without proper care.

Long-standing neck pain may give rise to ongoing inflammation, aggravating muscle spasms, chronic headaches, and a decreased range of motion that becomes more difficult to address as time goes on.

How can chiropractic care provide relief?

As a physician who takes a comprehensive, whole-person approach to neck pain, Dr. Newton, DC, always determines the underlying cause of the problem to ensure his treatment approach is as efficient and effective as possible.

Structural chiropractic care works on many levels to provide instant and long-lasting relief from chronic neck pain. It’s a natural, noninvasive way to:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Correct spinal misalignments
  • Initiate soft tissue repair
  • Restore muscle balance

Depending on the nature of your pain, your plan may also include therapeutic massage, cold laser therapy, spinal decompression, and physical therapy.
